Answer after-hours calls and book appointments

The author set up a Synthflow receptionist that captured caller details and booked next-day appointments, and a Retell agent that answered clinic FAQs and flagged frustrated callers (vendor comparison).

What they did
The author built a Synthflow receptionist for a home services company in about 45 minutes with its visual builder. It answered after-hours calls, captured name, address and service type, and booked next-day appointments. Separately, for a 12-provider clinic, a Retell agent drew on a loaded FAQ document and post-call analysis flagged frustrated callers for same-day follow-up by the office manager.
How it went
Synthflow handled simple intake well across 30 test calls, but looped back to the start when a caller rescheduled and changed service. Retell flagged 3 frustrated calls out of 80 tests, with no hallucinated FAQ answers.
Worth knowing
The author works for Retell, so the comparison favors it. Synthflow's Pro plan was about 700ms latency and $450/month, and the agent was weak off-script.

Try it yourself with n8n

Help me build an after-hours receptionist workflow for [my business type]. It should answer calls or messages outside [business hours], collect the caller's name, phone number and reason for calling, answer these common questions: [list of FAQs], and offer next-day appointment slots from [my calendar]. Flag callers who sound frustrated for my follow-up. Before it books anything or sends any message, pause and show me what it is about to do. You're done when I've tested it with a sample call and seen the booking and flag work.
